HD Providers - Freesat

Freesat is a joint venture between the BBC and ITV to offer a subscription-free satellite TV service. You pay a one-off charge and can watch up to 140 digital satellite TV and radio channels - and some selected HD programmes - free of charge.

What channels can you watch?

Currently BBC HD is the only high definition broadcast channel offered on Freesat. You can also access selected ITV programmes in high definition with Freesat's behind the red button service.

What equipment do you need?

You'll need an HD ready TV and Freesat HD box. Alternatively, you can choose a TV with Freesat HD already built into it.

The Freesat HD box

Freesat HD is the non-subscription HD option, offering a standard digital TV box with HD capability. Freesat+ HD boxes, which have personal video recording functionality - allowing you to pause, rewind and record HD programmes.

How much does Freesat cost?

Freesat options are available from Argos, Comet, Currys, John Lewis and some independent electrical stores1. Here's what you need - and what it will set you back:

  • Freesat HD box - prices start at around £68 for the HD box; you need one box for every HD ready television set in your home
  • Freesat+ (HD PVR) - prices start at around £250
  • Installation - standard installation starts at around £80 and includes the satellite dish
  • Monthly fees - Once you're set up, it's free to watch HD

What about installation?

Retailers will recommend you buy an installation package at the same time as buying your box. A professional will install your new satellite (or you can use an existing satellite if you have one) and set up your equipment, or you can use your existing satellite.

Freesat says...

"Lots of HD programmes are available with surround sound; so it'll not only feel like you're squelching in the mud at Glastonbury, it'll sound like it too."2
