Other HD TV Devices
Until early 2008 there were two competing technologies for high definition DVDs - Sony's Blu-ray system and HD DVD designed principally by Toshiba. However, in February 2008 Toshiba abandoned further research and production of their format leaving Blu-ray as the sole commercial technology for high definition DVD production. Whilst some stores may still have a selection of HD DVD format titles available for purchase or rental, it may not be a great idea to buy a dedicated player.
Blu-ray
Also known as Blu-ray Disc or BD, this optical disc storage unit is used for high definition video and data storage. A two-layer Blu-ray Disc can store 50 gigabytes - that's almost six times the capacity of a DVD.
Xbox 360
Microsoft's game console, the Xbox 360, can deliver high definition pictures from certain games and with an HD DVD add-on show high definition movies.
Playstation 3
The latest Playstation 3 games console has an integrated Blu-ray player and can deliver HD content from both disk and specific HD games. These consoles have an HD connection via HDMI and, as you'll see in the input/output connections section, section, that's another reason for specifying a TV with more than one HDMI input.
