HD Picture Aspect Ratio

Aspect ratio is nothing to do with the actual size of the picture; it is in fact the ratio of the width of the screen to its height. The old analogue standard for televisions is 4 by 3, which means that if a screen is 4 units wide then it's 3 units high.

Remember that the screen width is not the size of the screen as far as a retailer is concerned. Screen sizes are always quoted from the diagonal measurement corner to corner. So a screen that is 28 inches wide, in 4 x 3 ratio, would be advertised as a 35 inch TV.

Screen size

High definition ready TVs are wide screen, with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio, so one that was the same 28 inches wide as mentioned above would only be slightly over 15 inches high and have an advertised screen size of just over 32 inches.
