High Definition TV Contrast Ratio

When shopping around for an HD ready TV you'll become aware of the different contrast ratios each model has. This number makes a significant impact on how your picture will look and specifically refers to how deep the black appears on your screen.

Contrast ratio numbers

These contrast numbers are the ratio between white and black colours on your screen. So for 3000:1, the contrast ratio shows white being 3000 times brighter than black. The general rule is that the higher the contrast, the better and brighter the colours of the output.

Manufacturer guide

Sometimes the contrast ratio advertised on an HD ready television isn't 100% consistent - different measurement tools are used by different manufacturers. It's always advisable to compare different screens side-by-side while you're shopping for your new screen, ideally using a high contrast scene for comparison - a night time shot in a thriller, for example - where low contrast shots might reveal grey blotches in places that should be black.
